So Many Firsts

Read "So Many Firsts", a first milestones keepsake sample storybook: a fictional example of a personalized book.

  1. On the very first day, Jake was small enough to fit in two arms. Mom and Dad counted ten fingers and ten toes.

  2. One sleepy morning, Jake looked at Dad and smiled. Dad smiled back so big that Mom laughed out loud.

  3. Jake rocked left. Jake rocked right. Then—whoops!—he rolled all the way over and looked very surprised.

  4. Something tiny and white peeked out of Jake's gums. 'A tooth!' said Mom. Jake tried to bite his spoon to prove it.

  5. Jake sat up all by himself, tall as a tower of blocks. Then he knocked the tower down. That was the best part.

  6. Once Jake learned to crawl, he went everywhere. Under the table. Behind the chair. Straight to the dog bowl.

  7. 'Ba,' said Jake. 'Ba-ba.' Then one day: 'Dada!' Mom pretended to be jealous. Dad pretended not to cry.

  8. Jake let go of the couch. One wobble, two wobbles, three steps—right into Mom's arms.

  9. One candle, one cake, one very messy face. Jake decided frosting belonged in his hair.

  10. At the lake, Jake put his toes in the water. Cold! Then he splashed Dad. Then he splashed Dad again.

  11. No more bottle—Jake had a cup with a lid. He drank it all and said 'Ahhh!' like Dad does with coffee.

  12. The barber's chair went up, up, up. Snip, snip. Jake held Dad's hand and was very brave.

  13. At two, Jake could run, jump, and say 'No!' He could also say 'Love you,' which was much better.

  14. The crib went away. A big bed with a rocket blanket arrived. Jake tucked in his teddy bear first.

  15. At the park, a boy wanted Jake's shovel. Jake thought about it. Then he gave him the bucket too.

  16. Jake's first bike had four wheels: two big and two small. He pedaled to the mailbox and back and rang the bell nine times.

  17. Three candles, a dinosaur cake, and a roar. Jake blew out every candle in one big breath.

  18. A new backpack. A new teacher. A big hug at the door. Jake waved goodbye and only looked back once.

  19. Every birthday, Dad made a mark on the kitchen door. The marks climbed higher and higher, like a ladder to the sky.

  20. Jake looked at all his firsts and asked, 'What's next?' 'Everything,' said Mom and Dad. And they hugged him tight.
